Strong contrast is what gives Barbican its character. The black-stained oak finish and walnut veneers create a darker, more architectural look than a standard bookcase, while the black metal legs keep the profile lifted and modern rather than heavy.

The layout is what makes it especially useful. Open sections across the upper part give plenty of room for ceramics, books and decorative pieces, while the lower cupboard helps keep less display-worthy items tucked away. In the centre, three adjustable shelves make the unit more flexible, while the fixed shelves to each side give the overall design a more structured feel. Sliding cupboard doors keep the front clean and neat, and the cut-out circular handles with wood panels behind add a detail that feels distinctive without becoming fussy. As part of Gallery Direct’s Packed-Flat Design Project, it is designed for easier delivery through the home with reduced packaging, and the tools needed for assembly are supplied.
